Solar Rebates, Incentives, and Tax Credits

MARYLAND INCENTIVES
Solar energy systems placed in service before December 31, 2016 receive a 30%
federal tax credit for systems; previous tax credit cap no longer applies.
MARYLAND STATE GRANT PROGRAM
The grant calculation will be as
follows: $0.50/Watt (DC) for systems up to 20 kW. Maximum grant is $1,000.
Maryland Sales Tax
Incentive
Solar energy system and sales of electricity from qualifying solar energy
equipment is exempt from state sales and use tax.
Maryland Property Tax Exemption
Solar energy systems are exempt from state and local real property taxes.
Maryland Property Tax Incentive
A solar system may be assessed at no more than the value of a conventional
system. Up to $5,000 credit, not to exceed the taxes imposed on a property
during a fiscal year.
MARYLAND COUNTY TAX INCENTIVES
- Anne Arundel County Property Tax Incentive: Up to
$2,500 credit on county property taxes. Expires June, 2012.
- Baltimore County Property Tax Credit The geothermal and
solar property tax credit is equal to 50% of the cost of the system, up to
$5,000 for heating and cooling systems, and $1,500 for water heating
systems.
- Harford County Property Tax Incentive: Up to $2,500
credit on real property taxes, may not exceed the taxes imposed on a
property during a fiscal year. May be carried forward two additional years.
- Prince George’s County Property Tax Incentive: 50% of
the cost of the system. May not exceed the taxes imposed on a property
during a fiscal year. May be carried forward two additional years.
Eligible costs include parts, components and accessories necessary to operate
the device as well as reasonable installation costs. Only costs incurred during
the 12 months preceding a credit application are eligible for a tax credit.
The amount of the tax credit may not exceed the taxes imposed on the property
during a fiscal year. Any amount of the credit not taken in the tax year in
which the application is granted may be carried over for an additional two
years.
The total value of credits granted by the county during a fiscal year may not
exceed $250,000 for solar and geothermal devices.
